AN ODE TO SMILING
Let us decide on the route that we wish to take to pass our life and attempt to sow that route with flowers.
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean -
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down - who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
With your one wild and precious life?

Dust if you must.
But wouldn't it be better
to paint a picture, or write a letter,
bake a cake, or plant a seed.
Ponder the difference between want and need.
Dust if you must.
But there is not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb!
Music to hear, and books to read,
friends to cherish and life to lead.
Dust if you must.
But the world's out there
with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
a flutter of snow, a shower of rain.
This day will not come round again.
Dust if you must.
But bear in mind,
old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go, and go you must,
you, yourself, will make more dust.

'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.
'I don't much care where', said Alice
'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

Seeing For And As Others
Can you measure the effect in the world of our seeing this tonight? This is not without its effect, believe you me. When you see the truth, you are doing it for others as much as for yourself because Who is doing it is not an individual. Who is doing it is the One who is the inside story of all these contestants on the face of the earth. You are doing it for the others and as the others as much as for yourself. And if we have a feeling of responsibility and caring for this sorry old world, we start with ourselves because our true self is the Self of all. We are telling the truth for others as others.
