New Ideas for the 21st century ...

"When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself.  When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world."  ECKHART TOLLE

Stillness Speaks.    I welcome you with a reminder of Eckhart Tolle's profound yet simple teachings which have helped countless people throughout the world find inner peace and greater fulfillment in their lives.

At the core of the teachings lies the transformation of consciousness, a spiritual awakening that Eckhart sees is the next step in human evolution.  An essential aspect of this awakening consists of transcending our ego-based state of consciousness.  This is a prerequisite not only for personal happiness but also for the ending of violent conflict endemic on our planet.  We each have the power to make a difference and this website is my contribution to spreading new ideas for the twenty-first century.

Marian @ Krysan

Think (!) ...

Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have laboured hard for.  SOCRATES

Philosophy.. A brand new addition to the site is a page called THINK (!). This is in honour of an Open University course called 'Philosophy and the Human Situation'. Just to give you an example of what's on offer, I learned early on that nineteenth-century philosopher John Stuart Mill's main targets were around the tyranny of the majority, that is, the oppressive effects of social pressure to conform.  In this one statement lies a haven for many an independent spirit ...

But, herein is also a hint of more to come: cogent arguments for the philosophy underpinning the whole of the world-wide happiness and wellbeing movement today.  Why should people be happy?  What makes a good life?   Watch out for more.  Maybe, even discussions around equality for members of other species and then perhaps issues around Darwinism, the 'selfish gene' and altruism.  Join me today in THINK (!) for more thoughts on thinking critically from philosopher A C Grayling ... and a few thoughts from me  ...

Beautiful Minds ...

"When we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. "  Marianne Williamson

Women's Studies.  Another Open University course that has had a profound effect on the way I view the world was called 'The Changing Experience of Women'.  Thirty years on and I find 'Women's Studies', brand new in the early 1980s, is now mainstream.   Through words from the heart, I send my personal good wishes to each of the North-eastern women mentioned in the Krysan-page called BEAUTIFUL MINDS.

You will find news of another woman working for good by clicking on the MIDLANDS HUB.  On this page you will meet Marion Aslan from Coventry.  Marion is a teacher and a  mental health activist who has built up a network of connections extending not only throughout the western world, but which also  embraces the people of Africa.  The African link is via the EleMental Great Hope School in Kenya where orphans and poverty-vulnerable children are fed and educated by volunteers.  Should you wish to learn more, simply go to the EleMental website at www.elemental.org.uk.

  Jewel Net of Indra ...

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." MARCEL PROUST

Green Spirituality. Explore man's interconnectedness by clicking on JEWEL NET OF INDRA on the main menu.  Here, the story of the Jewel Net of Indra is retold and you will also catch a glimpse of a world-wide movement, Green Spirit.  The message is clear.  It is easy to forget our place in nature - that we depend on plants for oxygen, just as they depend on animals for the carbon dioxide they breathe.   We are all global citizens, but what kind?  Do we know what our actions are doing?  How do we behave towards our neighbours?  Are we trying to reduce our impact on the world?

What we do as individuals can make us either the most destructive species on the planet or the wisest and most aware.  We can choose how we use water, what we eat, what we buy, how much we travel, how much energy we use, how we vote, and what we throw away.  Please note, you can now access the full text of HRH Prince Charles' recent and much reported speech on the environment by clicking on INDRA'S NET and scrolling down the page to the link.

South West Hub ...

"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year."  RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Positive Psychology.    Click on SOUTH WEST HUB where you will find new Youtube links to Dr. Chris Johnstone's lecture on resilience.  This was part of the 2010 Bristol Happiness Lecture where Miriam Akhtar also made a useful contribution with her toolkit for countering depression.  In PAMPHLETEERS, another positive psychologist, Dr. Alex Linley writes on the character strength of competitiveness.  This pamphlet also contains observations from a Sunderland physician, Dr. Mohan Nabar, on the way we treat our young.  And, there's more - simply click on PUBLISHING and select PAMPHLETEERS from the drop-down menu.

While you are on the site, why not download back issues of REALITY NEWS from Cherry Knowle Hospital in Sunderland - archived safely in PUBLISHING  lest they be lost forever.  One of the best (in my opinion) is about the life and work of Charlie Chaplin who left the world with a legacy of laughter.  Laurel and Hardy come in as a close second!

Old King Coal ...

"Only those who have toiled in the depths of the earth know the true price of coal."  ANONYMOUS

Social History.  If you are at all curious about what Catherine Cookson described as 'a way of life that should not be allowed to be forgotten', don't miss out on this Krysan experience.  Clicking on PUBLISHING will take you to the true stories in COALMINING and from there to a unique collection of jokes in PIT TALK.  The jokes are true to the old Durham dialect and, like the stories, are the result of many years of research by the late Laurie Moran of Brandon who was a good friend of mine.

The story currently on view is of the so-called 'Rocking Strike 1863' and is taken from Laurie's book, The History of Brandon Colliery 1856 - 1960.  This is now a collector's item and one of the few detailed records of day-to-day life in the Durham Coalfield over a 100 year period.  The contents of this book, one man's passion and his life's work, will be of some interest to social historians and to people researching their family history.

"To set the scene, spare a few moments for a tour of nearby Durham City, its cobbled streets so dear to Durham hearts."  MARIAN MOORE

Reality ...

Summer edition 2010 ...

"I, for one, truly believe that individuals can make a difference in society. Since periods of great change such as the present one come so rarely in human history, it is up to each of us to make the best use of our time to help create a happier world." DALAI LAMA

Sunlight Everywhere

The Starfish Flinger

As the old man walked along the beach at dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea.  Finally catching up with the youth, he asked why he was doing this.  The answer was that stranded, the starfish would die if left in the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish,” countered the other. “How can your effort make any difference?“  The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to safety in the waves.  “It makes a difference to this one,” he said.
