Marian @ Krysan
Dear Visitor Welcome to the Krysan website where I hope you will find much to interest you in relation to Positive Psychology, sometimes known as the Science of Wellbeing or Happiness. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Scroll down for an overview of the site, or simply select the page of your choice from the side menu. Marian
Planting Golden Seeds
It's back to basics when DR. FEELGOOD meets Alice. Here, Dr. Feelgood gently coaxes young Alice into an understanding of Positive Psychology, his persona being based on a series of happiness articles in the Times way back in 2003. Alice (in Wonderland) needs no introduction. Look out, too, for another new kid on the block in RESEARCH. Here, you will be introduced to Miriam Akhtar from Bristol in England. Miriam is welcomed as a pioneering Positive Psychologist and an expert in this new science. It is a privilege to have Miriam on board and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for sharing her expertise in a raft of practical strategies for a happier life. Change your thoughts, change your life. It works! If you're a health or education professional or interested in sampling what the science of well-being is about, check out how Miriam Akhtar may be able to help you with Positive Psychology Masterclasses in LATEST NEWS. Think (!)
A brand new addition to the site is a page called THINK (!). This is to honour an Open University course (on which I am a student) called Philosophy and the Human Situation. Just to give you an example, nineteenth-century philosopher John Stuart Mill's main targets were around 'the tyranny of the majority', that is, the oppressive effects of social pressure to conform. In this one statement, lies a safe haven for many an eccentric lifestyle (including my own). But, there is also a hint of more to come, cogent arguments for the philosophy underpinning the whole of the world-wide happiness and wellbeing movement today. Watch out for more. Meanwhile, join me today in THINK (!) where you will find an article intriguingly labelled 'Breakfast with Socrates'. It does - indeed - all get curiouser and curiouser ... The Krysan Blog
Go to PUBLISHING and click on KRYSAN BLOG to see how the latest blog developed into ideas around big issues in society, first around the crisis in the global economy, and then around the medicalisation of distress. The points of morality raised are not academic; they affect all of us in one way or another. It's all about values and principles. Rant over. Time for change. Last year, these blogs allowed a brief glimpse into the lives of people such as Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi. Likewise, blogging has given me the opportunity to extol 'the extraordinary healing power of ordinary things', inspired by a book of that name by world-famous philosopher and physician, Dr. Larry Dossey. Curious? Then go to PUBLISHING and select ARCHIVES. The most read Krysan Blog is on 'hearing voices'. A close second is that on 'optimism', with the blog on 'laughter' also being highly rated. Pamphleteers
For another good read go to PUBLISHING and select PAMPHLETEERS. The current pamphlet is about the Power of Intuition with yet another article from Sunderland physician, Dr. Mohan Nabar, a passionate pamphleteer who writes straight from the heart. So, if it's opinions, news and views you are after from people who enjoy mulling over issues in society, the PAMPHLETEERS is the place to look. For those of you who enjoy a longer read, why not download back issues of REALITY NEWS from Cherry Knowle Hospital in Sunderland - archived safely here on this website lest they be lost forever. Or, savour Krysan's own mind, body, spirit magazine, REALITY which is also to be found in PUBLISHING. Have fun, spread joy, share the love ... Latest News
LATEST NEWS signposts the Happiness and Wellbeing Network in South Tyneside ,giving dates and times of meetings which are open to all who happen its way. I'm also delighted to be publicising the Healing Opportunities Provision Scheme (HOPS). This unique organisation operates out of the beautiful Quaker Meeting House in Roker, Sunderland, and helps people by providing complementary health services. Also to be found in LATEST NEWS is information on how to obtain historian Logan Ewing's fascinating book on the History of St. Nicholas Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. A new enhancement to the site is ready access to the NHS Online Mental Health Checker through USEFUL LINKS. This useful NHS service is described as 'a sympton checker aimed at victims of the credit crunch, as well as people going through stressful periods in their life'. No doctor or nurse required. Just a thought ... Pit Talk for Durham folk past, present and future
Clicking on PUBLISHING and then PIT TALK will take you to some of the true stories (in COALMINING) and a huge collection of the in-jokes (in PIT TALK) that the miners of the Great Northern Coalfield told each other. The jokes originated in the early twentieth century when Sir Charlie Chaplin strode the boards and are evidence that his refreshingly childlike humour caught on (big time) in the pit villages of the North East of England. This comes via the years of research in the archives of the Durham County Advertiser by the late Laurie Moran. But, if it's the work of Durham artist Norman Cornish you're after, go to USEFUL LINKS for access to his new website. Norman has been capturing the North East in paint for almost eight decades. He, like Laurie Moran, was a Durham miner. Finally, if you're homesick or heartsick or simply curious, click on the link to take a 'Youtube tour' around Durham City.

Strengths Tip - Gratitude
People strong in Gratitude are constantly thankful for the positive things in their lives.
Mothers' Day is a perfect opportunity to show your gratitude towards your Mother, or indeed other people in your life who have loved and nurtured you. Demonstrate your gratitude sincerely by taking account of the tastes and values of the person, so that you tailor your gift or action to maximize its impact. Use this occasion to think more deeply about the non-material means of expressing your gratitude, rather than following the convention of ideas such as confectionary or mass-produced cards. You could also use Mothers' Day as a springboard to become more authentic and personal with your gestures of gratitude more generally. Value the human touch and the desirable impact of a personalized card or gift, tribute, donation, or even a verse of original poetry. Make sure you deliver thanks in real time and don't forget your colleagues? When did you last take the time to express your thanks to those who support you daily? If time is short, then send a thank you email, text or even give an old-fashioned smile? CAPP/07.03.10
